An auto level (dumpy) is still how most Australian set-out gets done. Tripod, staff, a compensator that finds level, a number you can trust. No batteries to die at 6 am. If the job is reduced levels and not a laser plane, this is the instrument.
How to choose
- General site set-out: a 24–32× auto level is plenty.
- You need a flat-head tripod and an E-face staff. The level alone is half a kit.
- Digital levels speed staff reading. Optical is cheaper and does not mind rain as much.

- Laser or auto level?
- Laser if one person is checking a slab all day. Auto level if two of you are transferring reduced levels and the laser would be overkill.
- What magnification?
- 32× is the site default. 24× is fine on residential. Do not buy 40× unless you are doing long engineering runs.
